Mission

The Center for Accessibility and Inclusive Education is committed to providing students with disabilities the tools, reasonable accommodations, and support services to participate fully on campus. The Center for Accessibility is responsible for working with students with documented disabilities to determine eligibility for reasonable and appropriate academic accommodations. We will assist students in assuring that these accommodations are implemented, while empowering students with disabilities to realize their academic and personal potential. In keeping with this objective, students are expected and encouraged to utilize the resources of Disability Services and the College to the degree they determine necessary. Although a significant degree of independence is expected of students, Center for Accessibility and Inclusive Education is available to assist and maintain the accommodation process.

Getting Started: A Guide for New Students

You can request support from Center for Accessibility and Inclusive Education as soon as you apply to RVCC, get step-by-step instructions on how you can register to receive college disability support. You can also get answers to some frequently asked questions. Please note that requests for assistance are reviewed by our staff in the order they are received. The review process may take up to 2 to 3 weeks.

Schedule an intake appointment - This meeting is an important part of the process because the students are given the opportunity to share information about their own, unique experiences and limitations.

Submit supporting documentation – can be submitted at time of intake and must be from a qualified health care professional that describes your disability and functional limitations.  If you do not have any documentation on-hand, or have difficulty getting it from your health care provider, please contact the Center for Accessibility and Inclusive Education (previously known as Disability Services or DS) for assistance.  For more information on supporting documentation, please review the Documentation Guidelines.

Determine Disability Services eligibility – After completing an intake and submitting supporting documentation, DS will determine your eligibility for services.  Information from the documentation and intake will be discussed to determine reasonable accommodations by the committee.

Follow-up – During the follow up we will discuss any approved accommodations and how to share this information with your professors. If there is a need for additional documentation or a need for updated paperwork, DS will discuss that with you and help make a plan for accomplishing those tasks.
