Raritan Valley Community College’s Institute of Holocaust and Genocide Studies will present an online film screening of Rebuilt from Broken Glass, Wednesday, November 2, from 7-8 p.m.

The event, which is free of charge and open to the community, is in commemoration of Kristallnacht, also known as Night of the Broken Glass. Kristallnacht is the name given to the violent attacks against the businesses, places of worship, and homes of Jews throughout Germany and in the annexed countries, including Austria and Sudetenland, on November 9-10, 1938. The violence was implemented by the Nazi leaders.

The 40-minute film features Holocaust survivor Fred Behrend, who, as a 12 year old in 1938, witnessed the flames of Kristallnacht in Germany, saw synagogues on fire, and soon fled Nazi tyranny with his family. Several years after entering America, he earned a personal victory over the Nazis, teaching democracy as a GI to German POWs. At the age of 92, however, he discovered that a miracle still awaited him—one that was exactly 80 years in the making.

A discussion and question-and-answer session with Behrand and the film’s director, Larry Hanover, will follow the film screening.

The program will be held via Zoom. Advance registration is required at https://raritanval-edu.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_fMTdCYC6TcmM9tUyRYkETg.

The event is being presented in partnership with The Jewish Federation of Somerset, Hunterdon, and Warren Counties; the Shimon and Sara Birnbaum JCC; the JCC Holocaust Memorial and Education Center; JEWISH LIFE; and Jewish Family Services of Somerset, Hunterdon, and Warren Counties.
