Free Adult Literacy, English Language Education Programs
Raritan Valley Community College is a recipient of a Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA 2014) federal grant to assist local adults in gaining the necessary literacy and English skills to participate in workforce training programs and employment.
Coordinated by RVCC’s Workforce Training Center, the Integrated English Literacy and Civics Education Program will provide free adult literacy and English language education for non-English speakers. Classes will focus on such skills as listening, speaking, and writing. The program is scheduled to begin in October, with in-person placement testing and online, live classes via Zoom.
The goal of the program is to have non-English speaking adults obtain the skills necessary to receive training in in-demand, entry-level occupations, including food preparation and food serving-related fields, as well as the construction industry, and prepare them for a sustainable career with industry-valued credentials.
A majority of the entry-level jobs in these occupations are staffed by employees who have either a certificate in ServSafe® Food Handler or an OSHA 10 card. The ServSafe® program, developed by the National Restaurant Association with the help of foodservice industry experts, prepares individuals to safely work in the hospitality and retail industry. The OSHA 10 certificate training program provides 10 hours of training in the areas of appreciation, prevention, avoidance, and reduction of health hazards and safety in the workplace. Upon successful completion, adults in the program will choose to receive either a ServSafe® Food Handler or OSHA 10 certification.
