Virtual Programs to Focus on History of Racism, Little Rock Nine
Raritan Valley Community College’s Institute of Holocaust and Genocide Studies and the Paul Robeson Institute will offer two upcoming virtual programs focusing on the history of racism and the experiences of the Little Rock Nine. The programs are free of charge and open to the public.
The following programs will be presented:
Friday, January 22, 10-11:15 a.m.: “The Mission, Vision, and Work of the Jim Crow Museum: An Anti-racism Facility Dedicated to Building a Just Society with Dr. David Pilgrim”
The program will feature a virtual tour of the Jim Crow Museum of Racist Memorabilia at Ferris State University. The museum serves as a base for quality scholarship addressing the complexities of race, race relations, and racism. While difficult to view, these exhibits document the history of commercialized racism in the United States from the late 19th Century to the present, demonstrating a history of racism and Jim Crow. Dr. David Pilgrim, Vice President for Diversity and Inclusion at Ferris State University and Curator of the Jim Crow Museum of Racist Memorabilia, will share an important history that’s critical for everyone to understand.

Friday, February 5, 10-11 a.m.: “Learning Through Experience: Hear Civil Rights History Unfolded with Dr. Terrence Roberts”
Engage with history and hear about the start of school desegregation in the South from a man who lived through it. RVCC’s “Learning Through Experience” program will include an online presentation and question-and-answer session with Dr. Terrence Roberts, who was one of the Little Rock Nine in 1957. These young people were the first African American students to attend Little Rock Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas. Dr. Roberts will reflect on his life experiences and how they are impactful to our understanding of the world today.
