Holocaust Institute Webinar to Focus on Exhibition Highlighting Art as Response to Mass Violence
The Raritan Valley Community College Institute of Holocaust and Genocide Studies will present a webinar on ARTIVISM, an online exhibition that shows how the arts are used as a mechanism for preventing and responding to mass violence, Friday, October 23, from 3-4 p.m.
The program will feature Kerry Whigham, curator of the ARTIVISM virtual exhibition, and Aida Šehović from Bosnia and Herzegovina, one of the artists involved in the presentation.
Focusing on the personal, emotional and historical realities of mass atrocities, ARTIVISM showcases the essential role of the arts as a grassroots tool for social transformation and a deterrent to systematic violence. It features the works of six artists and activist collectives from across the globe: Rebin Chalak Ismael from Iraq, Canada’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission, Elisabeth Ida Mulyani from Indonesia, the South African Intuthuko Embroidery Project, the Argentinian Grupo de Arte Callejero (GAC), and Aida Šehović from Bosnia and Herzegovina.
This presentation is coordinated through The Auschwitz Institute for Peace and Reconciliation, which is the world’s largest non-governmental organization that trains public officials in genocide and mass atrocity prevention.
