New Trustee Named to Board
Raritan Valley Community College’s (RVCC) Board of Trustees welcomed new member Dr. James A. Von Schilling at its meeting held Tuesday, August 18. The Somerville resident was appointed to the RVCC Board by the Somerset County Board of Chosen Freeholders.
Dr. Von Schilling has been an English Professor at Northampton Community College in Bethlehem, PA, since 1984, where he also serves as Humanities Faculty Coordinator and Supervisor of the Liberal Arts Program. He previously taught at Hackensack High School and Middle School and at Rider University and Bowling Green University, where he earned his doctorate. He also earned an M.A. in Education from New York University and a B.A. in English from Princeton University.
At Northampton, Dr. Von Schilling has chaired both the college’s Hispanic Caucus and Technology Roundtable and organizes its annual Peace Conference. He has been awarded Northampton’s Endowed Chair in the Humanities as well as Club Advisor of the Year and has served as Project Director for grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH). He has been a national mentor for the NEH and has served on the Board of Governors for the Popular and American Culture Associations and on the editorial boards of both the Journal of American Culture and the Journal of Popular Culture. Author of The Magic Window: American Television, 1939-1952, Dr. Von Schilling is a co-founder and organizer of the Somerville Jazz Festival.
