Solo Exhibition of Faculty Artwork Slated
Raritan Valley Community College’s (RVCC) Arts & Design department will present Tools of the Trade, a solo exhibition of work by full-time faculty member Virginia Smith of Ewing. The exhibition will be on view February 19-March 18, in the Art Gallery at the College’s Branchburg campus.
Focusing on the thresholds of art and design, the work in the exhibition is predicated on artistic and spatial perceptions. Through virtual compositions, 3D modeling, rendering, installations, painting, drawing and other traditional techniques, conceptions of light and shadow, solid and void combine to tell stories of real and imagined spaces.
The show is being coordinated by Darren McManus, Assistant Professor and Art Gallery Director. An artist’s talk will be held Friday, February 21, from 5-6 p.m., in the Art Gallery, followed by a reception from 6-7 p.m. Both are free of charge and open to the public. Refreshments will be served.
An artist and designer, Virginia Smith has always been fascinated with drawing for its artistic merit and as a process to solve spatial problems. The two-dimensional representation of three-dimensional space, and the process of building, are the foundations for most of her work. Using graphic and drawing conventions, notions of space are manipulated and perceptions altered. In essence, her recent work is a series of personal studies on the manipulation of the gesture of space.
Smith received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Printmaking from University of Hartford/Hartford Art School and a Master of Science in Interior Design from Drexel University. She is an Assistant Professor and Coordinator of RVCC’s Interior Architecture and Design program, which she created in 2011. Smith also is the owner and principal designer of Breathe Design in Ewing.
Gallery hours are Mondays, 3-8 p.m.; Tuesdays, 10 a.m.-3 p.m.; Wednesdays, 3-8 p.m.; Thursdays, 10 a.m.-6 p.m.; and Fridays, 1-4 p.m. For further information, contact Arts & Design, 908-218-8876.
