Raritan Valley Community College will present “Passion and Soul: The Legacy of Blues Music in American History,” featuring award-winning saxophonist Vanessa Collier and her Band, Monday, February 17, from 1-2:30 p.m. The event, which is free of charge and open to the public, will be held in the Nash Theatre at the College’s Branchburg campus.

The program will feature limited onstage seating. Doors will open at 12:40 p.m.

Guest performer Vanessa Collier, a critically acclaimed musician, is the 2019 Blues Music Award Winner for “Best Blues Instrumentalist” and the 2019 Blues Music Award nominee for “Best Contemporary Female Blues Artist.”

Called an “amazing performer” by legendary blues artist Buddy Guy, Collier is a charismatic singer who plays several instruments in addition to saxophone. She thrives on connecting with her audience through her passionate and fiery performances, her intelligent and creative songwriting, and her soulful vocals. A graduate of the prestigious Berklee College of Music, the 28-year-old musician tours throughout the US and Europe, conducts clinics with her “Blues in the Schools Program,” and also offers private instruction.

The RVCC program will include a question-and-answer session with Collier, as well as an opportunity to meet the artist and her band.

The event is the sixth program in the College’s highly successful academic and musical interactive series, “Music as a Mirror on History,” in which artists perform and discuss their music within an historical context.
