Occupational Therapy Students Participate in Backpack Awareness Program
As part of an American Occupational Therapy Association program, Raritan Valley Community College Occupational Therapy Assistant (OTA) students participated in Backpack Awareness Day at the Lamonte School, the Bound Brook School District preschool, on September 18.
The OTA students observed how the children put on and took off their backpacks, then weighed and measured each bag to determine whether it was an appropriate weight and size for the child. The RVCC students also educated the preschool staff about the importance of a proper fitting backpack.
In January 2018 RVCC became the first community college in New Jersey to offer an Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree for an in-demand career as an Occupational Therapy Assistant. The OTA program is designed for students interested in entering the workforce immediately after graduation. It combines classroom instruction with clinical training in a community setting. The program is designed to be completed in two-and-a-half years, with four semesters of full-time coursework and one semester of full-time clinical fieldwork.
RVCC’s OTA program is currently accepting applications for the third cohort starting in the Spring 2020 Semester in January. For information about the program, contact Beau Younker, OTA Program Director, at 908-526-1200, ext. 8416 or beau.younker@raritanval.edu, or Kimberly Meany, OTA Academic Fieldwork Coordinator, at kimberly.meany@raritanval.edu or 908-526-1200, ext. 8439.
