November Shows at RVCC Theatre Feature Gypsy Jazz, American Soul, Folksinger’s Story
The Theatre at Raritan Valley Community College in Branchburg is offering a treat for music lovers in November, with sounds ranging from gypsy jazz and Latin swing to American soul and folk music. The following shows will be presented:
Velvet Caravan, November 1, at 1 p.m. & 7 p.m.; $15 (General admission; audience members may pre-order a $5 box lunch and dine before the 1 p.m. show. The 7 p.m. show includes light refreshments.)
Rooted in the gypsy jazz/swing and Latin swing styles, this high-energy, acoustic-based quintet of guitar, violin, standup bass, percussion and keyboards has emerged as one of the shining lights of Savannah’s burgeoning music scene. Refreshingly unorthodox, Velvet Caravan plays upbeat tunes from all over the world with thunderous virtuosity and a relentless sense of humor. The eclectic sounds are created by a motley crew of super-talented musicians from as close as Austin and as far away as Venezuela and Slovenia.
Soul of America, November 3, at 8 p.m.; $25 & $35
Soul of America delivers a power punch-packed performance of the greatest American soul hits, played by the people who helped make them famous and unforgettable to this day. This electrifying show includes a world-class rhythm section complemented by The Uptown Horns (the famed horn section for Aretha Franklin, James Brown and Bruce Springsteen), a Grammy award-winning guitarist, and an Otis-Redding sound-alike backed by three terrific singers and dancers. Audience members will be transported back to a time when the music made in the USA ruled the airwaves and dance floors worldwide. Warning: uncontrollable dancing in the aisle may occur!
Seeger (Randy Noojin), November 13, at 1 p.m. & 7 p.m.; $15 (General admission; recommended for audiences age 14 and older; includes discussion and light refreshments; audience members may pre-order a $5 box lunch and dine before the 1 p.m. show.)
America’s beloved folksinger/activist Pete Seeger is brilliantly brought to life in this mesmerizing solo show by writer/actor Randy Noojin. The show focuses on Seeger’s performance at a 1982 benefit concert in Washington, D.C. Advocating for free speech in Cuba, Seeger used his greatest songs to tell of his personal struggles for free speech in America. Through music, visuals and his own marvelous storytelling ability, Noojin takes audience members through Seeger’s prolific life and personal struggles, perfectly capturing the spirit, personality and passions that made him such a beloved American icon.
Those attending are asked to participate in the Theatre’s book exchange by bringing a previously read novel and then taking one from the lobby display.
