Several events have been planned at Raritan Valley Community College to commemorate Sexual Assault Awareness Month in April. The following events, which are all free of charge and open to the community, will be held at the College’s Branchburg campus:

“Musculinities in the Era of #MeToo: Men as Feminist Allies,” April 4, 4-5:30 p.m., Robeson Room, RVCC’s Evelyn S. Field Library: RVCC Professor of English Andy Manno will examine the role of men in the #MeToo movement, from supporters of the Men’s Rights movement who have denied that they have privilege and view themselves as victims, to men who see themselves as allies working to challenge sexism, homophobia and transphobia. The event is being organized by the College’s Women’s Center. For additional information, contact Brandyn Heppard at 908-526-1200, ext. 8530 or brandyn.heppard@raritanval.edu.

Zumbathon, April 7, 10 a.m.-7 p.m., Cafeteria: The daylong event, organized by Zufall Health Center and the Women’s Center, will enable participants to dance and exercise with top-notch instructors and raise awareness about sexual assault. For additional information, contact Brandyn Heppard at 908-526-1200, ext. 8530 or brandyn.heppard@raritanval.edu.

Denim Day, April 10, 12:30-3 p.m., Conference Center, Rooms B & C: During the first part of the event, community and RVCC organizations will provide information, assistance and crisis intervention about sexual assault. The program will include an interactive presentation educating people about abusive and healthy relationships, in an effort to stop violence before it begins. Denim Day is an annual day designed to raise awareness and educate the community about sexual violence prevention. Safe in Hunterdon, which is co-sponsoring the event with the student club To Write Love on Her Arms and RVCC’s Advising and Counseling Department, will provide a quilt that features patches created by survivors of sexual assault. The event will include prizes for activities as well as refreshments. For additional information, contact Gina Kuijlaars at gina.kuijlaars@raritanval.edu.

“In Her Shoes,” April 11, 4-5:30 p.m., the Library’s Robeson room: Arianna Cohen, Prevention/Outreach Coordinator for the Sexual Assault Support Services (SASS) at Zufall Health Center, will facilitate an interactive program focusing on partner violence and sexual assault. The program will enable participants to experience the perspective of a survivor of domestic/partner or sexual violence, and make decisions for themselves. A discussion will follow the presentation. Cohen coordinates the Somerset Violence Prevention Coalition to engage community members in combatting all acts of violence. The event is being organized by the Women’s Center. For more information, contact Brandyn Heppard at 908-526-1200, ext. 8530 or brandyn.heppard@raritanval.edu.

“Impossible to "Behave”: Sexual Assault in Women's Correctional Facilities,” April 26, 1 p.m., the Library’s Robeson room: Dr. Morey Williams, Adjunct Professor of Philosophy, Villanova University, will speak about the prevalence of sexual assault in correctional facilities and the culture of silence that surrounds it. Her presentation will draw from both theory and practice, highlighting her work in carceral studies and her years of experience working directly with incarcerated women.
