Kids Classes Focusing on STEM Topics Slated at RVCC
Raritan Valley Community College (RVCC) will offer a variety of classes this fall for children interested in STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) subjects. Detailed class descriptions of all science and other youth classes may be found at www.raritanval.edu/youth. The following youth STEM programs will be offered at the College’s Branchburg Campus:
Introduction to Mindstorm EV3 Robotics: Students ages 11-14 build and program unique Bricks 4 Kidz designed robotic models and learn basic programming concepts with the Mindstorms EV3 drop-and-drag programming blocks. Working in teams of two, students are given challenges for their models to complete. Emphasis is on developing critical thinking skills as well as stimulating creativity in a fun atmosphere. The class will be held Saturday, September 24, from 10 a.m.-noon. The fee is $50.
Junior Mechanical Engineering: Students ages 5-7 design and construct two mechanical toys (a CD spinner and a popper) that they may take home to continue the learning fun. The class will be held Saturday, October 1, from 10 a.m.-noon. The fee is $40.
Apprentice Mechanical Engineering: Students ages 8-12 use LittleBits® and work in collaborative groups to design pulleys and a robotic hand. The class will be held Saturday, October 1, from 1-4 p.m. The fee is $50.
Motorized Model Building with LEGO: Students ages 7-10 build at least two motorized models and enjoy creative free play. The class is designed to promote STEM learning in a fun and exciting environment. The class will be held Saturday, October 8, from 10 a.m.-noon, and repeated Saturday, November 19, at the same time. The fee per session is $40.
Junior Aerospace Engineering: Students ages 5-7 design and construct a simple rocket and a helicopter model that they may take home to continue the learning fun. The class will be held Saturday, November 5, from 10 a.m.-noon. The fee is $40.
Apprentice Aerospace Engineering: Students ages 8-12 design, create, test, and refine a flying machine such as a model airplane or a rocket that they keep at the end of the workshop. The class will be held Saturday, November 5, from 1-4 p.m. The fee is $50.
Junior Electrical Engineering: Students ages 5-7 create a simple circuit to power their own invention: a drawing robot. Students explore how to direct their robot and understand the importance of switches in electrical designs. Participants may take the robot home to continue the learning fun. The class will be held Saturday, December 3, from 10 a.m.-noon. The fee is $40.
Introduction to Industrial Engineering: Students ages 8-12 learn about foundational concepts of industrial engineering, including assembly lines; safety; and stamping, sorting and distributing materials. While participating in two activities, students become familiar with the industrial production methods of stamping and casting and take home products from their own “factory.” The class will be held Saturday, December 3, from 1-4 p.m. The fee is $50.
