What are you doing this summer? It’s not too early to start thinking about a summer internship! In fact, winter is the ideal time to begin researching positions and preparing for interviews—especially for some of the most competitive and sought-after internship programs. Read on to see how internships can give you an edge in today’s evolving job market!
Why Are Internships So Important?
Employers increasingly want to see experience in the new college grads they hire—and many companies end up hiring interns as full-time employees. Consider these statistics when evaluating the benefits of internships:
- 95% of employers said candidate experience is a factor in hiring decisions. (Source: NACE)
- 70% of employers offer full-time jobs to successful interns. (Source: NACE)
- Successful completion of an internship makes you 85% more likely to obtain employment following graduation. (Source: Monster.com)
In addition to making yourself more marketable to employers, internships allow you to:
- Test drive your career of choice before fully committing. You can also discover specific niches within the field that may appeal to you.
- Lay the groundwork for a higher salary as you develop skills, build motivation, and gain confidence.
- Understand how your college coursework is preparing you for today’s workforce.
- Make connections that can help you build your network and land a job in the future.
How Do I Apply for an Internship?
There are many ways to go about securing an internship, such as searching online job boards, making connections on LinkedIn, networking with people you know, or going directly to the site of the companies you’re interested in to visit their hiring section.
At RVCC, we understand the value of internships and offer guidance to students who are looking to secure one.
RVCC’s Office of Career Success & Experiential Learning assists individuals with preparing for the internship and job search process. The Office offers workshops each semester on resume development, effective interviewing skills, success tips, networking, and more. In addition, the office maintains an online database of job and internship postings.
