There are two types of computer degree programs at RVCC: Degrees designed to transfer to four-year colleges, and degrees designed to lead to direct employment. A variety of certificates are also available, offering specialized expertise in such areas as web development, computer support and more. Information Systems and Computer Networking
The area of computer information systems—under the headings of Information Systems (IS) and Information Technology (IT)—has become critical to the operation of many organizations. IS and IT staff must understand not only how computers operate, but also how they can be effectively networked together. In fact, network management is its own specialty under the Information Systems umbrella, and often involves a focus on security.The use of internet technologies has become pervasive and database management has also become an integral function. Job titles in this field include system administrator, network administrator and more.

Computer Programming
Computer programming—also known as coding—is the process of preparing a sequence of coded instructions that directs a computer’s operations and enables it to do certain tasks. There are many different languages used to program computers such as Java, C++, C#, Visual Basic, ASP, C and XML. If you’re logical, patient, interested in problem solving and enjoy working independently, this could be the field for you.

Web Development
A web developer designs interactive web pages and applications for the web and upgrades existing applications as new architectures are recommended for public use. He/she must have a comprehensive understanding of how the web operates, know how to incorporate the latest technologies, demonstrate the ability to successfully manage a project, effectively analyze and design web-based systems, and be able to integrate graphic design components onto a web page.

Game Development
Game Development is both a multi-billion dollar industry as well as one of the fastest-growing segments of the entertainment industry. According to the Entertainment Software Association, 60 percent of all Americans age six and older play computer and video games and 35 percent of all Americans identified computer and video games as the most enjoyable entertainment activity, easily surpassing television (18 percent) and movies (11 percent). Since video game design requires a large number of individuals with varied abilities, one must typically acquire skills in programming, project management and game design in order to be a video game designer.

Computer Support
A computer support specialist—also called an IT support specialist or help desk technician—is utilized throughout business, industry, government and non-profits. As the use of personal computers continues to expand into additional roles, support specialists are called upon for a wider variety of skills, including networking and security, in addition to the traditional roles of basic operations support and systems troubleshooting.
