RVCC to Hold Celebration of Kwanzaa: Festival of Family, Community, Culture
The public is invited to attend Raritan Valley Community College’s (RVCC) special cultural celebration of Kwanzaa, Tuesday, December 6, from 1-2:30 p.m. The event, which is free of charge, will be held in the Conference Center at the College’s Branchburg campus.
The program will feature award-winning historian Dr. Sylviane Diouf, curator of New York City Library’s Schomburg Center for Black Culture, and a musical performance by the Orange High School band.
Diouf, an expert on the African Diaspora, will speak on the history of Kwanzaa and the Black Power Movement. Diouf is the editor of Black Power 50 and author of Slavery’s Exiles: The Story of the American Maroons (January 2014) and Servants of Allah: African Muslims Enslaved in the Americas. Both works were published by NYU Press. The event is part of RVCC’s celebration of Visualizing Civil Rights.
Kwanzaa is an African-American holiday that celebrates family, community and culture. Participants will be able to learn more the holiday and RVCC’s rich cultural programs. The festivities will include a celebration of the seven principles of Kwanzaa: Umoja (Unity), Kujichagulia (Self-Determination), Ujima (Collective Work and Responsibility), Ujamaa (Family), Nia (Purpose), Kuumba (Creativity) and Imani (Faith).
