Kids Classes Focusing on STEM Topics Slated at RVCC
Raritan Valley Community College (RVCC) will offer a variety of classes this winter and spring for children interested in STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) subjects. Detailed class descriptions of all science and other classes for kids and teens may be found at www.raritanval.edu/youth. The following youth STEM programs will be offered at the College’s Branchburg Campus:
STEM Inventions with LittleBits: Students ages 7-12 create inventions using LittleBits, a platform of easy-to-use electronic building blocks. The class will be held Saturday, February 25, from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. The fee is $60.
Junior Environmental Engineering: Students ages 5-7 ponder hot environmental issues. The class will be held Saturday, March 4, from 10 a.m.-noon. The fee is $40.
Apprentice Environmental Engineering: Students ages 8-12 design, create, test and refine basic solutions related to alternative energy and environmental issues. The class will be held Saturday, March 4, from 1-4 p.m. The fee is $50.
Junior Civil Engineering: Students ages 5-7 are introduced to the engineering behind civil structures. The class will be held Saturday, March 11, from 10 a.m.-noon. The fee is $40.
Apprentice Civil Engineering: Students ages 8-12 design, create, test and refine a building structure and discover how forces such as tension, compression and bending are distributed throughout their structures. The class will be held Saturday, March 11, from 1-4 p.m. The fee is $50.
Engineering Principles via Building with LEGO: Students ages 6-10 build motorized models and discuss the engineering principles associated with their creations. The class will be held Saturday, March 18, from 10 a.m.-noon. The fee is $50.
Junior Chemical Engineering: Students ages 5-7 are introduced to the fundamental concepts of solids, liquids and solutions. The class will be held Saturday, April 1, from 10 a.m.-noon. The fee is $40.
Apprentice Chemical Engineering: Students ages 8-12 design, create, test and refine various mixtures and solutions with different chemical properties. The class will be held Saturday, April 1, from 1-4 p.m. The fee is $50.
Junior Animation: Students ages 5-7 explore animation engineering and design their own tools to help make pictures “come alive.” The class will be held Saturday, May 6, from 10 a.m.-noon. The fee is $40.
Apprentice Forensic Engineering: Students ages 8-12 use principles of investigative science and forensic engineering to analyze evidence in a simulated crime scene using math, science and technology. The class will be held Saturday, May 6, from 1-4 p.m. The fee is $50.
