In commemoration of Women’s History Month, the Women’s Center at Raritan Valley Community College, with assistance from the RVCC Foundation, is sponsoring a number of events the week of March 27. The programs will feature a keynote lecture by author Rebecca Traister.

The events will include talks from scholars, authors, students, activists and leaders in the field offering valuable insights about the past, present and future of Women & Gender Studies. The following programs, which are all free of charge and open to the public, have been scheduled at the College’s Branchburg campus:

Keynote speaker Rebecca Traister will discuss her best-selling book, All the Single Ladies, Wednesday, March 29, at 4 p.m., in the Conference Center. Viewed through the lens of an unmarried American woman, Traister’s book offers a remarkable portrait of contemporary American life. The text focuses on such topics as class, race and sexual orientation, and includes vivid anecdotes from contemporary and historical figures.

Dr. Carl Lindskoog, RVCC Assistant Professor of History, will speak on “The Triangle Factory Fire: Women, Labor, and the Workplace, 1911 and Today,” Monday, March 27, at 4 p.m., in the Robeson Room (Library). Dr. Lindskoog will discuss the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire of 1911, which claimed the lives of 146 garment workers and was one of the deadliest industrial disasters in American history. The discussion will focus on the tragedy and how it impacted workplace safety and women’s labor issues.

The META Theatre Company will present, “RISE! An Interactive Theatre Experience,” Tuesday, March 28, at 4 p.m., in the Conference Center (Rooms A & B). The Meta Theatre Company will present real-life scenarios focusing on social justice issues in our community. Audience members will learn about how people witness “hate talk” and sometimes don't know how to respond. The presentation will include examples of how one can react in such situations.

The College’s 2017 Women and Gender Studies (WGST) Essay Contest winners will be honored Thursday, March 30, at 1 p.m., in the Robeson Room (Library). This year’s winners, Arelys J. Cordero, Alexandra Mannix and Fabiana Rocha, will share their award-winning essays, which they will present at the upcoming NJ WGST Consortium.
