United Way of Northern New Jersey Women’s Leadership Council has awarded the Raritan Valley Community College (RVCC) Foundation a $5,000 grant to provide financially strapped students with scholarship support.

Now in its fourth year of being awarded, the ALICE Scholarship supports students in financial need who are pursuing a degree or certificate program tailored to prepare them for in-demand jobs across the region. Eligible coursework can lead either to employment or to a transfer program at a four-year institution of higher education.

A United Way acronym, ALICE (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) represents the one-in-four New Jersey households that earn above the poverty level but not enough to afford the basics. United Way research shows that more than 27,000 households, or 24 percent of Somerset County households, are classified as ALICE.

“United Way Women’s Leadership Council is pleased to partner with Raritan Valley Community College to support students from ALICE families who deserve a chance to reach their full potential,” said Council Associate Director Michele Dreiblatt. “Through the ALICE Scholarships, we are helping students on their path to employment and, ultimately, to financial independence.”

In addition to RVCC, the Council currently supports scholarships at Centenary College, Sussex County Community College, and Warren County Community College. Each institution offers a one-to-one match of the ALICE Scholarship.

“We are thrilled to be partnering with United Way to provide much-needed scholarship support for students who are struggling to make ends meet,” said Ronnie Weyl, Executive Director, RVCC Foundation. “To extend the impact of the Council’s ALICE Scholarship, the RVCC Foundation provides matching funds to award additional scholarships and help to alleviate the financial burden so many of our students face.”

The Council raises money for the ALICE Scholarship through two annual fundraisers. The United Way Honey Open Golf Outing is a women’s-only golf event held in Sussex County, and the Council’s regional breakfast is a networking opportunity for women business and community leaders throughout the region.
