RVCC Student Artwork Featured in Group Exhibition at Commercial Gallery
Artwork by Raritan Valley Community College student Steph Stokes is featured in a curated group exhibition, “Countering the Feminine Mystique: Gao Yuan, Stephanie Stokes, Xin Song, Sachigusa Yasuda, Sunhee Yoon,” on display through December 29 at Paris Koh Fine Art in Fort Lee.
According to information from the gallery, the exhibition “explores the works of distinguished women artists selected by three curators, inviting viewers to reflect on how patriarchal cultures have constructed the images and roles of women across different societies.”
Stokes’ piece, The Female Identity (Photoshop Digital Print, 48" x 24", 2024), was created in Professor Darren McManus’ Digital Artmaking class this semester. It also received the “Best in Show” award in the Digital/Multi-media category, selected by guest juror Jim Osman at the RVCC Juried Student Art Exhibition in November.
The Paris Koh Fine Art press release says of Stokes’ piece, “Reflecting on how women have been historically reduced to objects of pleasure or utility, Stokes critiques these dehumanizing perspectives and their persistence in modern culture. Her work challenges these harmful narratives, encouraging reflection and dialogue about identity and empowerment.”
Stokes is pursuing a degree in Graphic and Interactive Design at RVCC. She also received a BA in Art History from Rutgers University and has worked as a freelance artist.
