RVCC to Host Filmmaker, Screening of Film About Female Farm Worker, Union Organizer
Raritan Valley Community College will host filmmaker Laurie Coyle and present a screening of her 2018 documentary, Adios Amor: The Search for Maria Moreno, Tuesday, October 15, at 1 p.m. The event, which is free of charge and open to the public, will be held in the Event Center (Rooms A and B) at the College’s Branchburg campus.
A question-and-answer-session with the director will follow the film’s screening, which is the first on the east coast to feature the San Francisco-based director Coyle.
Adios Amor depicts the story of a hero that history forgot: Maria Moreno, a migrant mother driven to speak out by the hunger of her 12 children. Years before Cesar Chavez and Dolores Huerta launched the United Farm Workers labor union, Moreno became an outspoken leader in an era when women were relegated to the background. She was the first female farm worker in America to be hired as a union organizer.
Adios Amor traces Moreno’s life and labor activism against the larger backdrop of farmworkers’ struggles to secure a safe workplace in the southwest U.S. The film screening honors Indigenous People's Day (October 14) and Hispanic Heritage Month.
The RVCC event is sponsored jointly by the College’s Center for Teaching, Learning, and Scholarship (CTLS), the Provost's Office, Student Activities, the Division of Liberal and Fine Arts and Business and Public Service, and the Women's Center.
