RVCC Graduate Pens Essay on Children’s Book Project Focusing on Effects of Remote Learning
An essay written by RVCC graduate Cristina Merino, “A Creative Book Project, Cristina Merino, Raritan Valley Community College,” is included in Keeping Us Engaged: Student Perspectives (and Research-Based Strategies) on What Works and Why, Second Edition, collected and edited by Christine Harrington.
Merino, a 2024 graduate of the College’s Early Children Education program, wrote the essay about a project she completed in Professor Kathy Suk’s fall 2022 Teaching Language Arts to the Young Child class. Merino’s work focused on how remote learning during COVID impacted multilingual learners, and she then created a children’s book to highlight what she had learned.
She and the project were recognized at RVCC’s Nota Bene event, and Merino later shared her book at Smalley Elementary School’s Multicultural Night, Bound Brook, in spring 2023.
An Urban Education major/Spanish minor at Rutgers University, Newark, Merino plans to be an ESL teacher in the future.
