Performance, Discussion on Reggae Music Slated at RVCC
The public is invited to attend “Get Up-Stand-Up: Social Protest and Politics of Reggae Music,” featuring the critically acclaimed band, Universal Rebel, Monday, February 20, from 1-2:20 p.m., at Raritan Valley Community College. Universal Rebel’s lead singer is RVCC’s own Brandyn Heppard, a dynamic Assistant Professor of Philosophy.
The program, which will include a performance and discussion, will be held in the Nash Theatre at the College’s Branchburg campus. The event is free of charge.
Universal Rebel’s music, a mix called “Reggae Dub/Luv,” stresses the universal themes of community, love and unity. The group has opened for such performers/groups as Kanye West, the Roots and Jimmy Cliff and is deeply influenced by artists such as Bob Marley, Phish and Common.
A question-and-answer session will follow the discussion and performance. The event is being sponsored by the College’s Humanities, Social Science and Education Department; the Visual and Performing Arts Department; and RVCCArts.
