Opthalmic Science Student Wins National College Bowl
Raritan Valley Community College Ophthalmic Science student Judy Quinones of Bridgewater was named the winner of a nationwide College Bowl contest at Vision Expo East, held March 31-April 3 at the Javits Center, New York City. Vision Expo East is an annual event for ophthalmic professionals focusing on eyewear, education, and fashion.
Quinones is scheduled to graduate from the College in May with an Applied Science Degree in Ophthalmic Science. She also works in the optical industry as an apprentice optician. Quinones not only won the contest, but also shattered the record for the highest point total. The College Bowl trophy will be on display in the RVCC Optical Clinic for the next year.
The National Federation of Opticianry Schools (NFOS) College Bowl, which is sponsored by EssilorLuxottica, is an annual competition between representatives of opticianry programs that are affiliated with the National Federation of Opticianry Schools. It is a quiz-show type competition that features questions in anatomy and physiology of the eye, dispensing, fabrication, contact lenses, and optics.
RVCC offers an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Ophthalmic Science; an Ophthalmic Science Certificate – Apprenticeship Option program; and an Ophthalmic Laboratory Technician Certificate of Completion – Apprenticeship Option program.
