Summer break doesn’t have to mean hitting pause on your goals. For many students, it’s the perfect window to make real progress—without the pressure of a full fall or spring course load.

Whether you’re a high school student looking to get a head start, a current RVCC student trying to lighten your next semester, or a visiting student home for break, Raritan Valley Community College summer classes can help you move faster, spend less, and keep your momentum going.

And because many summer offerings are web-based, it’s easier to fit a class around your warm-weather plans without giving up your summer. But hurry! The first summer session begins on May 18, and spots are filling up fast. To explore classes, click here and select Summer 2026 from the pull-down menu—and apply today!

Three summer sessions to fit your schedule

RVCC offers three summer sessions based on course length. Some classes run for nine weeks, while others are designed to be completed in six weeks. There are two different six-week start dates, so you can choose the timing that works best for you:

  • 6-week session begins May 18
  • 9-week session begins June 8
  • Second 6-week session begins July 6

Why taking summer classes is a smart move

Taking community college summer courses is a great way to:

1) Knock out requirements without the full-semester squeeze
Summer is ideal for checking off a course that tends to pile onto an already-busy fall. Think writing, math, lab sciences, or a general education requirement. With fewer classes competing for your attention, it’s often easier to focus and finish strong.

2) Get ahead (or catch up) on your timeline
One course now can mean fewer credits on your plate later. Two courses could put you on a faster track to graduation—or create room for internships, clinicals, leadership roles, or a challenging major sequence.

3) Make your money go further
For a lot of families, cost is the deciding factor. If you’re focused on affordability, taking summer college classes can be a strategic way to earn credits at a lower cost, especially compared with many four-year options.

Visiting students: earn credits at home (and bring them back)

Home for the summer and heading back to your college in the fall? A course at RVCC can be a smart way to take care of a requirement, complete a prerequisite, or retake a class you want to strengthen while you’re close to home.

Many visiting students use summer to reduce their fall course load or make room for a demanding sequence in their major. And with plenty of online options, it’s easier to fit a class around work hours, internships, or travel plans than during a full semester.

A quick tip: before you register, review your home school’s transfer-credit policies so you can choose a course that aligns with your degree plan. With a little planning upfront, you can return in the fall with credits already earned, and more flexibility in your schedule.

High school students: get a head start with Jumpstart

If you’re a motivated junior or senior in NJ, RVCC’s Jumpstart Pre-College Program lets you take college-level courses that can transfer to four-year universities—so you can begin earning credits before you even graduate.

That’s why so many families look for summer programs for high school students that do more than fill time. The right program can help you start college with confidence, show initiative, and make your first year more manageable. If you’ve been searching for “pre college summer programs near me,” this is one of the most practical ways to turn summer into an opportunity to get ahead.
