Community Partners Honored at Martin Luther King Jr., Service Learning Breakfast
Local community partners were honored January 20 for their efforts to engage Raritan Valley Community College students in service learning and community engagement opportunities. The annual Martin Luther King Jr., Service Learning Community Breakfast was attended by more than 100 people at RVCC’s Branchburg campus.
During the event, which was held to celebrate the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., community partners, students, faculty and administrators gathered for a reflection and recognition of campus and community engagement activities. This year’s theme focused on combatting hunger and a faculty panel presentation highlighted projects that are addressing this issue.
Projects included: Holiday Food Drive (Poverty and Society Service Learning course), Let’s Can Hunger (Enactus Business Enterprise), RVCC ROARS Against Hunger (Student Nurse Association) and Snack Sacks (Education Club). Student projects are designed to provide fresh produce and canned food to those in need; educate people of all ages and backgrounds about hunger and ways to help; introduce children and families to community gardening and healthy eating; address student hunger; and cultivate the habit of giving back.
The community partner breakfast was part of a weeklong celebration at RVCC of the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Programs included the Student Government Association Social Justice Student Leadership conference; Students as Researchers: Tour of the MLK Monument and National Museum of African American History; RVCC Children’s Campus MLK Multicultural Activities; and Student Life Activities and Planning Board MLK Read-In.
