College Dance Program Offers Classes to Preschoolers at RVCC
Raritan Valley Community College’s (RVCC) dance program has teamed up with the College’s Children’s Campus to offer weekly creative dance classes for students enrolled in the childcare center.
The class meets every Tuesday morning for a 12-week session and combines movement, music, improvisation and imagination games. The class helps enhance the children’s awareness of their motor, cognitive and expressive abilities. Creative dance classes help students become more aware of their bodies and develop an awareness of other people and objects around them. The Children’s Campus students are learning dance vocabulary, developing their team playing skills, and experiencing the joy of movement as expression.
The National Dance Education Organization (NDEO) lists a number of benefits associated with creative dance classes for young children. Among these are physical development, emotional maturity, social awareness and cognitive development.
The program was initiated by Professor Loretta Fois, Coordinator of the dance program; Cathy Griffin, Director of the Children’s Campus; and first-year dance major, Nathan Forster of Warren. Children’s Campus teacher Wendy Rizzolo serves as the liaison, and the class is student taught by Nathan Forster and Alison Lenahan of Clinton, another RVCC dance major.
A limited number of spaces are available for young children at RVCC Children’s Campus, which is sponsored by the College and offers childcare for children ages three months to five years. The center is open Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m.-6 p.m., 12 months a year. It is licensed by the State of New Jersey and complies with all state licensing regulations. The program is directed by Cathy B Griffin, MS Ed, who has more than 40 years of experience in early childhood education. For information, call 908-231-8807 or visit www.raritanval.edu/childcare.
