At Your Service: RVCC Gives Back
At Raritan Valley Community College, we are committed to serving the community and enriching the lives of our neighbors, both near and far. As a service-oriented institution, we offer numerous opportunities to give back, both on campus and in partnership with local organizations. There’s bound to be an opportunity that speaks to you and inspires you to serve! Read on for some ways to get started.
Service Learning
Each year, more than 1,000 RVCC students provide service to over 250 local community organizations within 85 different courses through our Service Learning Program. This celebrated program makes it possible for students to serve their community as part of their classroom instruction while earning college credits. Partner organizations include nearby NJ branches of the American Red Cross, Habitat for Humanity and Meals on Wheels, as well as local civic and community groups such as the Somerset County Office on Aging, Elijah’s Promise Soup Kitchen and Lifeline Animal Rescue, among others.
The program has received national recognition including the Carnegie Classification for Community Engagement and the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll. Click here to learn about getting involved with Service Learning at RVCC.
Rotaract Club
This group tackles hands-on service projects to create positive change in the community and around the world. Recent projects include packing more than 50,000 meals to be sent to people living in Ebola-struck areas in Africa, and donating 250 pounds of school supplies in Nepal in conjunction with the Hunterdon County YMCA aftercare program. Fundraising to Fight Cancer
Working with the American Cancer Society, the College has a long history of raising money to fight cancer. RVCC students, staff and faculty raised over $250,000 in the first seven years of sponsoring Relay For Life events. Athletics
When not on the field or court, the RVCC Athletics Department is known for giving back. Recently the soccer team donated its previously worn uniforms to a team in South Africa through an organization called Peace Passers. The recycled uniforms are now being worn by the White River Lions, a local boys’ soccer team whose members live at the Msholozi Orphanage. The College also recently hosted its 6th Annual Pink Games—an event where players, coaches and fans wear pink to raise awareness for breast cancer. Environmental Club
This group seeks to create environmental awareness and eco-friendly living by making the campus more “green” through education and community projects. This includes helping to restore local New Jersey forests and other habitats, participating in beach and stream clean-ups and more. Click here to learn more about the College’s Environmental Club.
