RVCC to Stage Student Theatre Production Featuring Modern Take on “Everyman”
Raritan Valley Community College’s Arts & Design department will present a student theatre production of Everyman/Everywoman, by Virginia Egermeier, April 12-15, at 7 p.m. Directed by Adjunct Associate Professor Danielle Barry of Bridgewater, the play will be staged in the Welpe Theatre at the College’s Branchburg campus.
Technical direction is by Dave Porter (Clinton) and Kenny Savoy (Piscataway); sound is by Matt Sheehan (White Township.); Alius Connolly (Fanwood) is handling stage management; and costumes are by Kathy McClain (Hillsborough) and Joan Wagner (Hillsborough).
Everyman, the popular medieval play, was the most widely read, frequently produced play before the Elizabethan Age. The core story was Buddhist in origin, dating from thousands of years ago. It appeared again in an 11th Century Greek text of Christianized tales from Asia called Barlaam and Josaphat. In 1495, these tales became the first version of Everyman in Dutch, which was soon translated into English.
Virginia Egermeier’s shortened and modernized adaptation of Everyman happily makes it more accessible to today’s audience. The universal story truly speaks to every man or woman who has ever walked the earth. The play is approximately 45 minutes in length.
Appearing on stage in 16 roles are:
Maria Abruzzese (Princeton)
Hannah Fey (Milford)
Curtis Glover (Somerset)
Shelly Bernard (Manville)
Esteban Jacome (Middlesex)
Hunter Leeds (Asbury)
