Rachel Calof

The Theatre at Raritan Valley Community College’s January offerings range from improvisational comedy and satire, to a one-woman piece focusing on a Russian Jewish immigrant who braves a new life in North Dakota. The following shows will be presented at the Theatre in Branchburg:

The Best of The Second City, January 13, 8 p.m.; $15 & $25 (Reserved seating)

Daring, original and always spectacularly funny, The Second City offers satires with all the bells and whistles. Performed by The Second City Touring Company, The Best of The Second City features the greatest songs and improvisations from the group’s 52-year history, including bits made famous by such Second City starts as John Belushi, Tina Fey, Jason Sudeikis and Stephen Colbert. Come see the next generation of the comedy world’s best and brightest, performing its unique brand of unconventional and hilarious, improv-based sketch comedy.

Rachel Calof – A Memoir with Music (Kate Fuglei), January 31, noon & 7 p.m.; $15; includes a discussion and light refreshments (General admission; recommended for age 14 and older)

Experience the world of Rachel Calof, a Jewish bride determined to make a new life as a homesteader. The audience follows Rachel’s touching story as she emigrates from Russia to Devil’s Lake, North Dakota in 1894, crossing the ocean to marry a man she has never met. For four years, Rachel and her husband shared a 12' x 14' shack with her in-laws, her husband’s brother, wife and children, two dozen chickens – and a cow. Rachel gave birth to nine children, all of whom survived. Their descendants are proof of her triumph over adversity.
