RVCC Service Learning - Domestic Violence Project
SPACE: Students Promoting Awareness, Change and Empowerment
The Raritan Valley Community College Foundation sought and received funding from Investors Charitable Foundation to launch SPACE: Students Promoting Awareness, Change and Empowerment, a student service learning project that engaged members of the community through awareness and educational campaigns designed to prevent domestic abuse and to help individuals who may be victimized or who may know victims of abuse and direct them to appropriate services for assistance. The SPACE project involved up to 100 Raritan Valley Community College (RVCC) cosmetology and nursing students and a number of faculty who worked in partnership with The Resource Center of Somerset, a local domestic violence shelter. The Resource Center served as the authority on domestic violence and provided the training to RVCC students and faculty and to area salon professionals.
Through SPACE project activities, students reached out into the community where people live, work and play to provide individuals with information and resources that would help them become more aware of the issues of domestic violence, to help promote change in peoples' behaviors and attitudes, and to empower them so they either seek help to avoid harmful relationships or divest themselves of unhealthy relationships that are physically threatening. This project was a special initiative with RVCC's award-winning Service Learning program to integrate domestic violence projects into RVCC’s Cosmetology and Nursing curriculum while forging partnerships that have a meaningful impact on the community.
