Beginning in the Fall 2009 Semester, Raritan Valley Community College will be offering new programs in Exercise Science and Fitness. The Associate of Science (AS) in Exercise Science and the Fitness Specialist Certificate of Completion are both being offered by the College?s Health Science Education Department.

The AS in Exercise Science prepares students for employment in the fitness industry, including health clubs, corporate fitness centers and personal training. The program also prepares students for transfer into a four-year degree programs in such majors as Exercise Physiology, Kinesiology, Athletic Training, Sports Management, Exercise Science, Sports Marketing, Pre-Medical and related areas.

The four-semester program includes general education courses, as well as classes focusing on such areas as human anatomy and physiology, first aid and CPR, lifeguarding, nutrition, exercise physiology and body mechanics, kinesiology, sports management, and care and prevention of athletic injuries.

The Fitness Specialist Certificate of Completion prepares students for entry-level employment as personal fitness trainers in private health clubs, corporate and commercial fitness facilities or in their own businesses. The two-semester program combines in-class learning with practical, hands-on experience in the field. Courses focus on such areas as first aid & CPR, lifeguarding, aerobic conditioning and physical fitness. Program graduates are prepared to sit for the National Board of Fitness Examiners Exam to become certified in the field.
