RVCC FIRST COMMUNITY COLLEGE IN NJ TO GRANT VOTING RIGHTS TO ALUMNI REPRESENTATIVE TO BOARD

Raritan Valley Community College (RVCC) in North Branch has become the first community college in New Jersey to grant full voting status to the alumni representative on the Board of Trustees.

The Board?s actions follow Governor Corzine?s signing of the legislation on August 21. The bill allows a county college Board of Trustees to permit voting rights to the Board?s graduating class representative. It also requires the Board chairman to cast the deciding vote in the event of a tie under certain circumstances. It was sponsored by Assemblyman Christopher ?Kip? Bateman (District 16), Assemblyman Joseph R. Malone III (District 30) and Senator Walter J. Kavanaugh (District 16).

RVCC spearheaded the drive to grant voting rights to the alumni representative. Raymond H. Bateman, a member of the RVCC Board of Trustees and former chairman, has been advocating the change for more than six years.

?I always believed that anyone who served on the Board of Trustees should have the right to vote and fully participate in the process. Having a student as a voting member of the Board will bring a new perspective to the Board?s deliberations and give students an important voice on the College?s governing body,? said Bateman.

RVCC?s alumni representative to the Board of Trustees is Purvi Gandhi. Gandhi, a resident of South Brunswick, formerly of Franklin Park, is a May 2006 graduate of RVCC. She is pursuing a Bachelor?s Degree in Business Management with a concentration in Finance at Fairleigh Dickinson University, Teaneck.

Prior to the Board?s action, the alumni representative only served as an advisory member of the Board and had no voting privileges.

RVCC, located on Route 28 and Lamington Road in North Branch, NJ, and serving Somerset and Hunterdon County residents for close to 40 years, offers more than 80 associate degrees and certificates. In addition, customized training programs and non-credit courses are available for those seeking personal and professional development. The College is committed to offering a quality and affordable education through effective teaching, liaisons with the community?s businesses and state-of-the-art technology.
